Neural basis of corruption in power-holders

نویسندگان

چکیده

Corruption often involves bribery, when a briber suborns power-holder to gain advantages usually at cost of moral transgression. Despite its wide presence in human societies, the neurocomputational basis bribery remains elusive. Here, using model-based fMRI, we investigated neural substrates how decides accept or reject bribe. Power-holders considered two types brought by taking bribes: conniving with fraudulent briber, encoded anterior insula, and harm third party, represented right temporoparietal junction. These costs were integrated into value signal ventromedial prefrontal cortex. The dorsolateral cortex was selectively engaged guide anti-corrupt behaviors party would be harmed. Multivariate connectivity analyses further explored these processes depend on individual differences. findings advance our understanding mechanisms underlying corrupt behaviors.

Corruption and power in democracies

According to Acton: “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”. We study the implications of Acton’s dictum in models where citizens vote (for three parties) and governments then form in a series of elections. In each election, parties have Þxed tastes for graft, which affect negotiations to form a government if parliament hangs; but incumbency changes tastes across elections. We a...

Fast Voltage and Power Flow Contingency Ranking Using Enhanced Radial Basis Function Neural Network

Deregulation of power system in recent years has changed static security assessment to the major concerns for which fast and accurate evaluation methodology is needed. Contingencies related to voltage violations and power line overloading have been responsible for power system collapse. This paper presents an enhanced radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) approach for on-line ranking of ...

Dynamic social power modulates neural basis of math calculation

Both situational (e.g., perceived power) and sustained social factors (e.g., cultural stereotypes) are known to affect how people academically perform, particularly in the domain of mathematics. The ability to compute even simple mathematics, such as addition, relies on distinct neural circuitry within the inferior parietal and inferior frontal lobes, brain regions where magnitude representatio...
